The Sourland Planning Council is a non-profit volunteer organization formed to promote and encourage a comprehensive approach to planning, conservation, preservation of open space, protection of natural resources and protection of places of historical interest for the Sourland Mountain and its environs.

The Sourland Mountain comprises an area of about 62 square miles, spanning five towns and three counties. It is the largest contiguous forest in central New Jersey and is home to a number of threatened and endangered species of plants and animals. Many neotropical songbirds like the Scarlet Tanager only live in deep woods like the Sourland. To protect these deep woods species, the entire forest must be protected.

In addition to providing unique habitat, the Sourland Mountain provides drinking water to central New Jersey. The wetlands on the mountain form the headwaters of streams which supply water to Lambertville, and which eventually flow to the intakes of the Elizabethtown Water Company on the Raritan and Millstone Rivers. We are currently working to develop a unified plan for the entire mountain, with the five towns, (East Amwell, Hillsborough, Hopewell, Montgomery, and West Amwell).
